Winter sales 2026 in Greece: Consumer rights and shopping tips
The 2026 winter sales in Greece will begin on Monday, January 12, and continue until the end of February. The Hellenic Consumers’ Union (EEKE) has issued guidelines to help consumers shop safely and wisely during this period.
Key Consumer Rights During Winter Sales:
Clear Pricing:
Shops must clearly display both the original and discounted prices of products, along with the correct unit of measurement for each item.
Reference Price Requirements:
The previously applied price must be indicated. For items sold for at least 30 days, this is the lowest price applied in the past 30 days. For products on the market less than 30 days, the reference price is the lowest price applied in the past 10 days. For progressive discounts, the reference price is the price before the first reduction.
Discount Percentages:
Discounts may be displayed as a percentage. If more than 60% of products are discounted, the discount range must be clearly shown in the shop window and other communications. Otherwise, shops must note that discounts apply to selected items only.
Stock / Outlet Stores:
These stores must show the original price (crossed out) and the new discounted price, with optional display of the percentage reduction. During sale periods, all intermediate prices must be crossed out, emphasizing the current reduced price, while using terms like “sales” or “offers” in marketing communications.
Penalties for Misleading Discounts:
Misleading claims on price reductions or discount percentages may result in fines up to 2% of the annual turnover (minimum €20,000). Repeat violations within five years may increase the fine to 4% of annual turnover.
