A gynecologist in the northern city of Thessaloniki received a 30-month suspended prison sentence after being convicted of negligent homicide in the death of a 47-year-old woman following a hysterectomy in 2017.

The appeals court reduced his sentence by six months due to his previously clean record.

The 67-year-old doctor had treated the patient for years and the surgery was performed at a private clinic. After the procedure, the woman experienced severe bleeding and was rushed to the city’s George Papanikolaou Hospital for emergency surgery, but later died from cardiac arrest caused by blood loss.

In his defense, the doctor testified that he instructed staff to monitor her condition and notify him of any complications, claiming he was not informed of any issues. The prosecutor argued that he failed to adequately manage postoperative risks, contributing to her death.
