Greek-owned tanker hit by drone in Iraqi waters
A Greek-owned tanker was hit by a drone while sailing in Iraqi territorial waters on Wednesday, with the vessel’s two Greek crew members reported safe and in good health, Greece’s Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy said.
The New Andros, a Panamanian-flagged tanker, was carrying about 2 million barrels of Iraqi fuel oil when it came under attack.
The strike caused a fire aboard the vessel, prompting Iraqi rescue vessels to respond and extinguish the blaze. The ministry said the entire crew was safe and in good health.
Attack comes amid Gulf tensions
The incident occurred amid heightened tensions in the Persian Gulf, where maritime security concerns have increased.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency also reported that several commercial vessels in the Gulf came under fire overnight, with some sustaining damage that left them out of operation.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack on the New Andros.
