Greece under scrutiny for not implementing ECtHR judgements
The Director of Human Rights and officials of the Enforcement Office, which monitors the enforcement of judgements of the European Court of Human Rights, visited Greece to discuss the non-implementation of ECtHR judgements.
A delegation of officials from Council of Europe bodies visited Athens on 8 and 9 November to discuss a number of cases under the supervision of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.
During their meetings in Athens, the delegation also discussed the progress of the cases known as the "Bekirusta Group of Cases", which are closely related to the Turkish Minority of Western Thrace, including the ECtHR judgements of the Turkish Union of Xanthi, the Cultural Association of Turkish Women of the Prefecture of Rodopi and the Evros Prefecture Minority Youth Association.
Council of Europe officials held discussions with the Deputy Foreign Minister on the modalities for the implementation of the "Bekirusta Group of Cases" on freedom of association.
The delegation also discussed with the Nisiotis case groups the progress and outstanding issues related to the conditions of detention and effective remedies in their cases with the Secretary General for Justice of the Ministry of Justice and the Secretary General for Anti-Criminalisation Policy of the Ministry of Citizen Protection. Further measures to ensure full freedom of expression in relation to the cases were also discussed.
The delegation also met with the newly appointed Chairman of the State Legal Council and his team to discuss all ongoing cases.
