Greece is moving ahead with the replacement of older driver’s licenses as part of an EU-wide harmonisation effort, requiring all licenses issued before January 2013 to be exchanged for EU-standard cards by January 2033, authorities said.

The process, which will phase out old paper and early plastic licenses, is largely digital and involves submitting an application via the government platform along with identification, a biometric photo and the existing license. The cost is around €30.

Key deadlines apply to specific categories. Plastic licenses issued between 1999 and 2001 must be replaced by January 19, 2026, while the final deadline of January 19, 2033, applies to licenses issued in early 2013. For older paper licenses, deadlines vary by the driver’s year of birth.

Authorities said failure to replace an outdated license does not affect the lifelong right to drive but may result in minor fines during traffic checks and potential problems when driving abroad.

Drivers over 65 face additional requirements, including mandatory medical examinations and more frequent renewals, while those over 80 must renew every two years. Officials said the EU-standard license will enhance security, reduce fraud and ensure uniform recognition across member states.
