Greece will assign 250 border police to tighten patrol and surveillance measures in the Evros (Mric) region on the Turkish border.
According to AA-Komotini, in his speech during the 2023 budget negotiations in the parliament, Greek Citizen Protection Minister Takis Theodorikakos said that the fences built to prevent the passage of irregular migrants in the Evros region will be extended along the border, electronic surveillance systems will be updated and 250 new border police will be deployed.
Stating that their priority as a ministry is to prevent illegal crossings, Theodorikakos stated that in 2022, 250 thousand illegal crossings were prevented and 1200 human smugglers were caught.
Athens increased the length of the steel fence it installed on its land border with Türkiye to 40 kilometers in order to prevent irregular migration, and the construction of the fence was completed in August 2021.
