Greece to decide soon on possible social media ban for under-15s

The Greek government is expected to announce by the end of March its final decision on a proposed ban on social media access for children under 15, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Wednesday.

Speaking at an event in Athens on fake news and toxic online discourse, Mitsotakis said authorities are working to ensure that any measure adopted would be practical and compatible with European regulations, particularly the Digital Services Act.

According to polling data cited by the prime minister, around 80% of Greek citizens support restricting social media access for children under 15, although questions remain about how such a ban could be effectively enforced.

Mitsotakis also warned about the growing impact of misinformation online, saying that while fake news has always existed, it now spreads much faster due to digital platforms.

He added that social media can create addictive behavior among both children and adults, noting that the rapid flow of information combined with advances in artificial intelligence is making the fight against misinformation increasingly complex.
