Greece signs energy agreement with Israel

Greece and Israel have expanded their collaboration from defense to energy, marking another milestone in their strategic partnership. On December 23, 2024, the two nations signed an intergovernmental agreement in Athens to promote regional energy stability and develop innovative energy projects for the Eastern Mediterranean and the European Union.
The agreement was signed by Greek Minister of Environment and Energy, Theodoros Skilakakis, and Israeli Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Eli Cohen.
"A Step Toward Long-Term Cooperation"
Minister Skilakakis expressed his enthusiasm, calling the agreement a testament to the enduring partnership between Greece and Israel.
Green Energy Corridor to Europe
The agreement outlines plans to establish a "green" electricity corridor from Israel to the EU via Greece, a strategic project addressing climate challenges and bolstering energy resilience in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Israeli Minister: Energy as Political Power
Eli Cohen highlighted Israel's energy sector as a strategic asset, stating:
“Israel’s energy is political power. Strengthening regional ties through natural gas and electricity projects enhances Israel’s position as a regional energy hub, contributing to stability and economic growth in the Middle East.”
The visit also included discussions on natural gas supply chains, electrical grid connections, and joint ventures to strengthen energy ties between the nations.
