Greece records 21 West Nile virus cases
The cases were identified and investigated up to Wednesday, July 22, with the majority involving serious neurological symptoms.
Most patients show neurological symptoms
Of the 21 reported cases, 20 patients developed symptoms affecting the central nervous system, including encephalitis, meningitis and acute flaccid paralysis.
One patient experienced milder symptoms.
No deaths have been reported among people infected with the virus.
During the past week, 14 new locally acquired cases were diagnosed and reported. Authorities also identified one additional case involving a complex travel history, including travel to an endemic country abroad. The likely place of exposure remains unclear, and the case was excluded from the local case analysis.
Thirteen patients hospitalized
A total of 13 patients infected with West Nile virus are currently receiving hospital treatment.
Health authorities continue monitoring the spread of the virus, which is transmitted mainly through the bites of infected mosquitoes.
Cases reported across Attica and Thessaly
The majority of cases have been recorded in municipalities across the Attica region.
Reported locations include Spata-Artemida with six cases, Markopoulo Mesogaias and Pallini with two cases each, and single cases in Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni, Kropia, Lavreotiki, Agia Paraskevi, Nea Ionia, Halandri, Athens Municipality's 6th Municipal District and Glyfada.
Additional cases were reported in the regional unit of Larissa and the municipality of Palamas.
Authorities continue surveillance efforts and advise residents to take measures against mosquito bites, particularly during periods of increased mosquito activity.
