Greece backs EU roadmap for women’s rights
Minister for Social Cohesion and Family, Domna Michailidou, underlined the government’s position in an official statement, stressing that Greece stands firmly by the principles outlined in the initiative.
“As part of our country’s longstanding commitment to gender equality and the promotion of the rights of women and girls, we express our full political support for the European Commission’s Roadmap for Women’s Rights,” Michailidou said, highlighting equality, dignity, and social justice as guiding values.
According to the Ministry, the Roadmap sets out the EU’s long-term policy framework on gender equality. Its priorities include:
Protection from gender-based violence
Better health standards for women
Equal pay and economic empowerment
Work-life balance and caregiving support
Equal access to employment and decent working conditions
Inclusive and quality education
Political participation and equal representation
Stronger institutional mechanisms for women’s rights
Michailidou described the Roadmap as both “visionary and realistic,” noting that the Ministry will integrate its principles into Greece’s national action plan. She also emphasized efforts to combat gender-based violence and inequality in practice.
This direction is further reflected at the government level, as Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has established a Deputy Ministry for Equality and Human Rights within the Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family.
Finally, the Ministry confirmed that Greece will work closely with European institutions, social partners, and civil society to ensure that the Roadmap acts as a catalyst for real progress in women’s rights both nationally and across the EU.
