Greece approves 152 new textbooks under multiple-book system

Greek education authorities have approved 152 new school textbooks under the country’s multiple-book system, a key reform that will be introduced alongside new curricula in the 2027–28 school year, officials said.

The books, out of 173 initially submitted to the ITYE “Diophantos” digital platform, were approved by the Institute of Educational Policy (IEP) and the education ministry and will be made available in digital form to teachers. Educators will be able to review and select the textbooks to be printed during the first quarter of 2026.

For around 50% of subjects in primary school and lower secondary school, and 70% of subjects in the first year of upper secondary school, teachers will be able to choose from two to five alternative textbooks per subject.

A second evaluation round covering 91 additional books is under way, while a third round has begun for textbooks for the second and third years of upper secondary school.

The approved books were assessed by expert committees for content quality, alignment with the new curricula and suitability for digital use. All approved materials will remain available online.

The project is being implemented by the education ministry, the IEP and ITYE “Diophantos,” with around 1,400 evaluators involved, and is funded through EU structural funds. The list of approved textbooks is expected to be announced in the coming days following a ministerial decision.
