Greece recorded a 3.4% increase in fruit and vegetable imports during the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, according to data released by George Polychronakis, Executive Advisor to the Association of Greek Fruit and Vegetable Exporters (Incofruit-Hellas).

Imports reached a total of 434,790 metric tons in the January–June period, up from 420,530 tons in the first half of 2024. Notably, imports in June alone surged by 43.2% year-over-year.

Breakdown by Product (January–June 2025):

  • Potatoes: 189,800 tons (↓5.4%), with 75.7% imported from Egypt
  • Bananas: 156,477 tons (↑17.7%), 92.7% from Ecuador
  • Onions: 9,544 tons (↑14%), mainly from Austria (32.6%), the Netherlands, India, and Egypt
  • Tomatoes: 2,737 tons (↑21%), sourced from Germany, Turkey, and the Netherlands
  • Peppers (including sweet varieties): 2,020 tons (↓21%), nearly half (49.8%) from Israel
  • Apples: 7,047 tons (↓42%), mostly from Italy (34.2%), Poland, and North Macedonia
  • Avocados: 4,022 tons (↑7.2%), 68.7% from the Netherlands, followed by Israel, Spain, and Cyprus
  • Mandarins: 1,191 tons (↑13.9%), 42.4% from Israel
  • Oranges: 2,119 tons (↓25.6%), 2,015 tons from Egypt
  • Lemons and Limes: 10,549 tons (↑12.8%), with 64.9% coming from the Netherlands
  • Pears: 3,482 tons (↓17.4%), mainly from Argentina (23.4%), the Netherlands, and South Africa
  • Mushrooms: 7,244 tons (↑2.4%), 97.4% imported from Poland

The figures reflect shifting consumer demands, seasonal production gaps, and trade dynamics influencing Greece’s agri-food import landscape.

Officials from Incofruit-Hellas emphasized the importance of monitoring import trends to maintain a balanced domestic supply and ensure food security.
