Former Thessaly governor and three others found guilty for flooding caused by 'Ianos"
A Larissa Appeals Court on Thursday unanimously returned a guilty verdict for four defendants on trial for the flood damage caused by the storm "Ianos" in Thessaly and especially Karditsa in 2020, among them the governor of the Thessaly at that time, Kostas Agorastos.
The court imposed a 15-month prison sentence, suspended for three years, on the former governor and the former deputy regional governor of Karditsa, Kostas Nousios, as well as the heads of the Technical Works Department of the Thessaly Region and of the Regional Unit of Karditsa. The sentence was for the charge of causing flooding through negligence, which put property and human lives at risk.
All four defendents were acquitted by majority vote of charges of negligent homicide by omission, while the remaining six defendants, including the mayors of Karditsa and Mouzaki, the president of the Local Improvement Organisation of Tavropos, two executives of the Municipal Water Supply and Sewerage Enterprise of Karditsa and the head of Civil Protection, were acquitted of all charges.
