Flu strikes hard: 12 deaths and 17 severe cases in ICU

The flu continues to spread aggressively in Greece, with a new rise in positivity in the community during the last week, as reported by the National Public Health Organization (EODY). The EODY announced 12 additional deaths from influenza type A and 17 severe cases requiring intensive care unit (ICU) hospitalization. In contrast, the positivity rate for COVID-19 has decreased, and there were fewer hospital admissions for the virus.
From January 20 to 26, ten deaths from laboratory-confirmed influenza type A were recorded. Additionally, 13 new severe cases, involving eight men and five women aged 33 to 83, were admitted to ICUs. The report also included two retroactively reported deaths (from January 13 to 19) and four new severe cases requiring ICU care from the weeks of January 6-12 and 13-19.
Since September 30, 2024, a total of 23 deaths from laboratory-confirmed flu and 97 cases requiring ICU hospitalization have been reported.
Regarding COVID-19, between January 20 and 26, 21 people died, and eight were intubated. Currently, 25 patients remain intubated. The COVID-19 positivity rate has decreased, with 382 new hospital admissions. The average number of new admissions over the previous four weeks was 530.
In comparison to historical data, the flu's spread has shown a decrease this past week, with seven regions exhibiting low viral load levels, two with moderate levels, and one with a high level.
