Famellos: SYRIZA congress united, signals progressive turn
SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Sokratis Famellos declared the party’s 5th Congress a success of unity and democracy, dismissing predictions of internal conflict. “We disproved those who predicted a congress of discord and battles. It was a congress of democracy and synthesis. That is what the Left is,” he said in his concluding speech on Sunday.
Famellos highlighted that SYRIZA-PA took significant steps forward, presenting itself as a force standing "upright" and committed to a "progressive reversal" in national politics.
Turning to international affairs, he urged Greek and EU leadership to push for a ceasefire and sanctions against Israel, criticizing Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s communication with Benjamin Netanyahu as inappropriate. He voiced SYRIZA’s opposition to a Europe defined by “militarisation, oligopolies, and opacity.”
Famellos intensified his criticism of the current Greek government, calling its policies "unjust" and "neoliberal," warning that such approaches foster inequality and empower the far-right. He condemned what he described as the “politics of oligarchy” backed by both Mitsotakis and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
As a solution, Famellos outlined SYRIZA’s political plan, focused on challenging elite interests, breaking up economic cartels, and building a strong public state to defend labour and public goods.
Closing his remarks, he called for greater local mobilisation and “extroversion,” framing the congress as a starting point for political transformation and progressive victory.
