Exclusive farmers’ markets under consideration – Government eyes direct sales model

Greek Minister of Development Takis Theodorikakos announced plans to introduce farmers-only markets, as part of broader efforts to increase competition and lower consumer prices. The proposal is expected to be submitted to the Cabinet on May 28.

Direct “Farm-to-Shelf” Sales
The new model would allow producers to sell directly to consumers without intermediaries, operating in parallel with the current open market system. This initiative aims to provide cheaper products to the public while strengthening farmers’ income.

“Everything must be done to ensure competition in the market,” Theodorikakos emphasized.

Strengthening Market Oversight
The minister also revealed plans to establish a national regulatory authority for market supervision and consumer protection. This new body will consolidate the Consumer Ombudsman and existing oversight mechanisms, modeled after Greece’s Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE).

According to Theodorikakos:

  • Fines have been increased sixfold.
  • Market inspections have intensified.
  • A new code of conduct has been legislated.

These measures, he claimed, have contributed to the lowest inflation rate for food and basic goods in the EU.

Focus on Regional Investment
Referring to the new Development Law under discussion in Parliament, Theodorikakos emphasized support for rural and border regions.

“Our priority is to help young people stay in their hometowns, tackling both demographic challenges and national security concerns,” he said.

He stressed that a productive and competitive economy is essential for a strong and sustainable Greece. The government’s strategy combines major investments in research and innovation with support for the primary production sector.

Special attention was given to Evros, where reducing regional inequality is a key goal. The minister promised full transparency in the selection criteria for development funding.

Tackling Urban Cost of Living
Theodorikakos warned that unless investments are made in the regions, urban migration will continue, driving up living costs, especially housing.

To ease the burden on tenants, he noted Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' plan to offer a “rent refund” every November.
