The Hellenic Police have announced a series of intensified road safety and traffic enforcement measures ahead of the August 15 holiday, the (Dormition of the Virgin Mary), one of the busiest travel periods of the year in Greece. The initiative aims to ensure the smooth and safe movement of citizens and to prevent traffic accidents across the national road network.
According to the official statement, the measures are part of specific directives issued by the Police Headquarters to guarantee full activation, coordination, and supervision of all Traffic Police Services during the holiday period.
Key measures include:
Sector-based policing of the road network according to local traffic conditions.
Increased patrols and targeted checks at accident-prone locations.
Enhanced enforcement at the entry and exit points of major cities.
Special traffic operations within urban areas.
Stronger police presence at airports, ports, bus stations, and train stations.
Specialised inspection teams focusing on dangerous violations such as speeding, drunk driving, illegal overtaking, mobile phone use while driving, and failure to wear helmets.
Close cooperation with relevant authorities for coordinated action.
Public updates on traffic and safety matters whenever necessary.
Police will deploy patrol cars, motorcycles, and unmarked vehicles equipped for roadside checks, maintaining a heightened state of operational readiness throughout the holiday.
Truck restrictions on national roads
Heavy trucks exceeding 3.5 tons will face travel restrictions during peak holiday traffic:
Outbound: Thursday, August 14, from 16:00–22:00, and Friday, August 15, from 08:00–13:00.
Inbound: Sunday, August 17, from 16:00–23:00.
