Big discount on heating fuel: New prices and support measures
This price will primarily apply to urban areas, while rural regions may see slightly higher prices due to transportation costs. Last year, the starting price was €1.40 per liter. The reduction in oil prices promises relief for consumers by lowering energy costs.
Expected Price Drop Starting October 15
According to Themis Kiurtzis, President of the Federation of Greek Fuel Sellers, heating fuel will be sold at €1.14 per liter, based on current refinery prices. This price is expected to hold as long as there are no significant geopolitical changes. While this price will apply in city centers, rural areas may experience slight increases due to transportation costs. Last year, heating fuel was sold at €1.40 per liter at the start of the season.
Benefits of the Discount on Heating Fuel
The Federation of Greek Fuel Sellers highlights that this direct price reduction at the pump will offer significant benefits to consumers. People will be able to purchase more fuel at a lower cost, while sellers will face reduced financing costs due to a 20% decrease in required capital. Additionally, the drop in heating fuel prices is expected to reduce the use of wood and other alternative fuels, which could have positive environmental and health impacts.
Heating Assistance: Who Qualifies?
As in previous years, the government plans to provide heating assistance to specific groups. Eligibility will be determined based on factors such as family status. Those using wood and biofuel must reside in communities with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants to qualify for assistance. The amount of aid will vary depending on the region's climate. Last year, applications for the heating subsidy opened in November and continued through December, with a similar process anticipated this year.
Last Year's Payment Schedule:
- Purchases made by December 22, 2023, were eligible for reimbursement if invoiced by November 30 and applications submitted by December 8.
- Payments for purchases up to February 29, 2024, required invoicing by January 31, with applications due by February 15, 2024.
- For purchases made up until April 30, 2024, invoicing was due by March 31, with applications submitted by April 15.
Support Amounts and Conditions
Last year, heating assistance ranged from €100 to €800. This year, the maximum amount could increase to €1,000, but this will only apply to regions with high energy needs. The assistance will only cover one type of fuel, and recipients must purchase fuel worth at least double the amount of the subsidy to qualify.
The heating subsidy will only be available to individuals who meet specific criteria. Assistance will be provided for the primary residence and will be available to both renters and homeowners.
