Better processing leads to decongesting of migration facilities, ministry says

Forty Georgian and Pakistani nationals will be deported from Greece on Tuesday, following irreversible rejection decisions of their applications for asylum, the Migration and Asylum Ministry said on Monday.

Greek police is organizing the deportation proceedings of the 40, who are at deportation centers and will be flown to their countries of origin. An official of Europe's border agency Frontex will also be present during their departures.

The ministry said that a general decongestion at 33 facilities in Greece was taking place, after resolving the issue of interpreters. This led to an acceleration of reception, registration, and asylum granting, which in turn led to a shrinking by 3.8% of facility residents within a month.

Currently, slightly over 26,000 individuals are housed in facilities, down from nearly 28,000 in the previous month. The nearly 2,000 who have left facilities are third-country (non-EU) citizens who have either left Greece for other countries after being granted asylum, or asylum applicants/refugees granted asylum who are now allowed to work, covering great labor shortages in agriculture and construction sectors, and who do not live in facilities anymore.
