The Netherlandsminister for asylum and migration and foreign affairs, David van Weel, visited the fence along the Greek-Turkish border in the Meriç (Evros) region on Thursday, Greek authorities said.

Van Weel toured the border barrier near the town of Ferecik (Feres) in northeastern Greece, accompanied by the regional police director for Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Lambros Tsiaras. He was briefed on the role of the fence and progress in its construction, officials said.

During the visit, the Dutch minister also met Dutch police officers serving with Frontex, the European Union’s border and coast guard agency, which is deployed in the Meriç (Evros) area.

According to AMNA, Van Weel later travelled to the Fylakio Reception and Identification Centre in northern Meriç (Evros), where he was received by the secretary general for the reception of asylum seekers, Spyridon Stathoulis, and the head of the Reception and Identification Service, Yiannis Fragoulis, who provided a tour of the facility.

The visit concluded at Dedeağaç (Alexandroupoli’s) “Democritus” airport, where van Weel toured the Regional Centre for Integrated Border and Migration Management. He was welcomed by regional and local police officials, who briefed him on the centre’s operations, Greek police said.
