Alexis Haritsis calls for meeting of political leaders’ council

Alexis Haritsis, leader of the New Left, called on Friday for the immediate convening of both the Council of Political Leaders and the Parliament’s Committee on National Defense and Foreign Affairs, citing what he described as a dangerous and alarming situation in the country’s foreign policy.

In his statement, Haritsis sharply criticized the government, outlining the following:

“The state of the country’s foreign policy is no longer merely worrying. It is dangerous and terrifying.”

He noted that the Minister of National Defence, Nikos Dendias, has been making “statements about flags on coffins,” and accused the new U.S. ambassador to Greece of directly interfering in domestic and economic matters, while ministers of the Mitsotakis government “ask her for autographs.”

Haritsis argued that Greece is being drawn into the U.S.–China rivalry by a government that “does not safeguard national interests.” At the same time, he accused the prime minister of promoting energy agreements that serve “the aggressive geopolitical designs of others,” leaving Greece exposed to risks.

On the Ukraine issue, Haritsis criticized Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for signing agreements on maritime drones with Kyiv instead of working toward peace, claiming that such moves further strain Greece’s relations with Russia.

He added:

“Where exactly is the prime minister leading the country? Does he intend to involve Greece in dangerous military adventures?”

Haritsis announced that the New Left parliamentary group is submitting a request for an emergency meeting of the Committee on National Defense and Foreign Affairs so that the foreign minister can brief Parliament.

He also called on the prime minister to request that the President of the Republic immediately convene the Council of Political Leaders, ensuring that all parliamentary parties receive full and proper information on the situation.

“We will not allow coffins, nor will we allow our country to become a field of dangerous geopolitical rivalries,” Haritsis concluded.
