5.1-magnitude earthquake shakes Lesvos; schools closed

The 5.1-magnitude earthquake that struck the island of Lesvos on Tuesday, at 10:38 p.m., caused landslides between Argenos and Vafios. According to the president of the Lepetymnos Community, Themis Kammenos, the road is closed.
No other damage has been reported so far.
Professor of Dynamic Tectonics, Applied Geology and Natural Disaster Management Efthymios Lekkas, said to the Athens -Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA) that the earthquake occurred in the underwater area, but close to the land, and there are no reports of damage, while he stressed that they are monitoring the development of the phenomenon.
Schools of all levels in the municipal units of Mantamados, Mithymna and Petra of the Municipality of West Lesvos will remain closed on Wednesday, January 22, in order to inspect the school buildings. According to the Mayor of West Lesvos Taxiarchis Verros, "there is no report of damage to the schools, but we are proceeding with an inspection of the schools for precautionary reasons."
