Greece’s rail network ranks as the least dense in the European Union, with just 14 meters of track per square kilometer, according to Eurostat data released on Thursday.

The EU’s railway network totaled 200,947 kilometers in 2023, with the highest densities concentrated in countries with well-developed rail infrastructure. The Czech Republic led the bloc with 123.2 meters of track per square kilometer, followed by Belgium (119.2 m/sq km), Germany (109.5 m/sq km) and Luxembourg (104.8 m/sq km).

At the other end of the spectrum, Greece had the sparsest network, followed by Finland with 19.4 meters of track per square kilometer.

Meanwhile, high-speed rail lines in the EU, designed for speeds of 250 km/h or more, have grown significantly over the last decade. From 2013 to 2023, high-speed networks expanded by 47.2%, adding 2,744 kilometers to reach a total of 8,556 kilometers.
