The private healthcare market in Greece broke the 2-billion-euro barrier for the first time in 2023, growing at a rate of 5.4% from 2022, as a result of long-standing problems in the public healthcare system and accumulated demand caused by the pandemic.

ICAP Crif estimates that in 2024 the market grew a further 7.4% to €2.16 billion, with the main volume of €1.3 billion coming from general clinics, while another €340 million represents revenue from private maternity hospitals and €545 million from diagnostic centers.

The private clinic market, which reached its highest point in 2012 with takings of €1.2 billion, has been recovering steadily since 2016, regaining the ground lost during the crisis. The recovery also explains the attraction of strong investment funds recently placed in the local market, strengthening concentration in the sector, with an emphasis on Attica, dominated by two large business groups.

Despite attracting high investments, funds were used to concentrate the sector (the capacity in number of beds remained at the 2018 levels in 2022, at around 14,570), which was strengthened through the successive acquisitions of recent years.
