Opposition decries new law easing involvement of politicians’ relatives in foreign-based firms

Α late-night amendment easing restrictions on the participation of politiciansrelatives in foreign-based companies triggered sharp opposition in Parliament before its passage.

Introduced as part of a Justice Ministry bill, the provision permits spouses, close relatives, and partners of political figures to participate in foreign companies – except those based in non-cooperative tax jurisdictions or tax havens.

The opposition from PASOK, SYRIZA, KKE and Course of Freedom MPs denounced the measure as weakening transparency and control mechanisms, calling for its withdrawal and labeling it “tailor-made.”

Critics argued it opens loopholes for indirect offshore involvement.

Justice Minister Giorgos Floridis defended the amendment, stating the general ban on politicians remains and that family members are still barred from companies in tax havens. He cited “interpretive issues” in the previous law.

Government sources said the previous 2016 law conflicted with EU legal standards, and the new provision aligns domestic law with European Union norms.

SYRIZA countered that the amendment could still allow indirect ties to offshore firms. The ministry dismissed the claim as inaccurate.
