Inflation edges 2.7% higher in January

Inflation in Greece amounted to 2.7% in January, marginally higher than the 2.6% recorded in December, the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) reported on Friday.
On a monthly basis, the consumer price index fell by 0.7%, compared to a 0.8% decrease in the corresponding comparison of the previous year.
ELSTAT data show that the cost of natural gas jumped by 26.5% year-on-year in January, amid concerns about a new chapter in Europe’s energy crisis.
Rents increased by 9.2%. In tourism-related sectors there was a considerable hike, as air travel became 31.6% more expensive last month on an annual basis, while hotel prices rose by 16.8%.
The food category showed a marginal price increase of 0.1% in January, as price decreases of 10.5% in olive oil, 2.7% in fruit and 1.3% in vegetables were offset by increases of 7.6% in water and soft drinks, 7.1% in fish, 5.7% in beef and 3.9% in chocolate.
