Greece doubles IRIS transfer limits to boost digital payments

In a move aimed at further modernizing Greece’s digital payment infrastructure, the government announced that the daily limits for person-to-person (P2P) and person-to-business (P2B) money transfers via the IRIS system will double to €1,000 starting at the end of 2025.
Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis made the announcement during the “360 Payments” conference, calling IRIS a “national champion” in fast, secure digital transactions. The IRIS platform, developed by DIAS in cooperation with Greek banks, processed over 57 million transactions in 2024 alone — a figure that has doubled annually.
To curb tax evasion and ensure transparency, a monthly ceiling of €5,000 will apply to personal transfers between individuals. However, no monthly cap will be imposed for payments to self-employed professionals such as lawyers, doctors, and technicians.
The new limits are expected to encourage more efficient, cashless transactions while closing regulatory gaps that allowed some freelancers to bypass professional banking channels.
