Greece is set to be the hardest hit among developed European countries by demographic decline, according to a new report from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

Currently, the country has 36 people over the age of 65 for every 100 working-age citizens. The shrinking share of young people is expected to reduce the annual growth of per capita GDP by around 0.4 percentage points on average between 2024 and 2050.

The report warns that these demographic trends will place significant pressure on Greece’s pension system and call for policies to include older workers, attract migrants, and boost investment in technology and productivity.
