PASOK asks questions about negotiations with Bulgaria over Arda River water
The agricultural sector in northern Evros remains uncertain about the future, as the three-month extension of the intergovernmental agreement between Greece and Bulgaria for water allocation via the Arda River ended on September 30, 2024. Despite repeated requests from PASOK MPs and local authorities, the government has not provided clear answers about the progress of negotiations, as highlighted in a recent statement.
Farmers are waiting for a new agreement, while Bulgaria is demanding high compensation for the energy losses caused by the water diversion, according to reports. Additionally, funding for the 5 million euro upgrade of the Therapi Evros Dam is delayed due to pending studies, and repairs to the Komaron Reservoir remain stalled.
In light of this, PASOK MPs Manolis Christodoulakis and Dimitris Mantzos submitted a new question on November 29, 2024, seeking clear answers regarding the following:
The current stage of negotiations with Bulgaria and the timeline for their completion.
The use of the European legal framework for the fair distribution of water.
The timeline for upgrading the dams and restoring the reservoirs.
