Parties and Coalitions in October 2 Elections sin Bulgaria: Key Dates and Figures
Following are key dates and figures about all political entities in the order in which they will appear on the ballots.
United People's Party initially registered to run but subsequently failed to register candidate lists.
Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) (party)
Established January 4, 1990 in the coastal city of Varna. A a member of the Liberal International and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) in the European Parliament (EP). Chaired by Mustafa Karadayi. Ahmed Dogan is Honorary Chairman. MRF has participated in all 12 parliamentary elections - twice in a coalition and ten times alone. MRF has managed to pass the 4% threshold for entry in Parliament in all elections it has run: October 13, 1991 - 7.55% of the votes; December 1994 - 5.44%; April 19, 1997 - 7.92% (in a coalition); the June 17, 2002 elections it ran in a coalition once again and won 7.45% of the votes. The June 25, 2005 elections brought the party 12.81% of the votes, in the the July 5, 2009 - 14.45%; May 12, 2013 - 11.31%; October 5, 2014 - 14.84%; March 26, 2017 - 9.24%; April 4, 2021 - 10.51%; July 11, 2021 - 10.71%; November 14, 2021 - 13%.
Bulgarian Union for Direct Democracy (party)
Established December 13, 2015 and co-chaired by Georgi Nedelchev and Svetla Milusheva. Has participated twice in parliamentary elections on a straight ticket (not in a coalition): on April 4, 2021 when it won 0.10% and on November 14, 2021 when it got 0.22%. Has never passed the 1% threshold that would make it eligible to receive a state subsidy.
BNO (party)
Established October 10, 2013 and chaired by Georgi Georgiev. Has participated in three general elections on a straight ticket: March 26, 2017, when it won 0.11%, April 4, 2021, when it got 2.95% and November 14, 2021, when it got 0.09%.
Unity National Movement (party)
Established on April 15, 2005, the party is chaired by Nikola Ivanov and has participated only in the May 12, 2013 general elections, when it won 0.05%.
VMRO - Bulgarian National Movement (party)
Established June 20, 1999. Member of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group (ECR) in the EP. Co-chaired by Angel Djambazki, Aleksandar Sidi and Iskren Vesselinov. Has ran in seven parliamentary elections: twice on a straight ticket and five times in a coalition. Following is its election results: June 17, 2001 - 3.36%; June 25, 2005 - 5.19%; October 5, 2014 - 7.28%; March 26, 2017 - 9.13%; April 4, 2021 (straight ticket) - 3.64%; July 11, 2021 - 3.14%; November 14, 2021 - 1.08%.
Just Bulgaria (coalition)
Established to participate in the October 2, 2022 elections by the United Social Democracy party and the Social Democrats Political Movement. Co-chaired by Yordan Gergov (chair of the United Social Democracy party) and Elena Noneva (chair of the Social Democrats Political Movement).
Direct Democracy party
Established August, 2005 under the name "Reform", renamed "Direct Democracy" in December of 2013. Chaired by Petar Klissarov. Has run three times in parliamentary elections: April 4, 2021 - 0.11%; July 11, 2021 - 0.12%; November 14, 2021 - 0.05%.
National Front for the Salvation of Bulgaria (NFSB) (party)
Established May 17, 2011 and chaired by Boris Yachev. Has run three times in general elections in coalitions: October 5, 2014 - 7.28%; March 26, 2017 - 9.13%; April 4, 2021 - 2.37%; July 11, 2021 - 3.14%; November 14, 2021 - 0.33%.
Continue the Change (coalition)
Established April 15, 2022 and co-chaired by Kiril Petkov and Assen Vassilev. For the October 2 elections, Continue the Change is registered in a coalition with the Volt party and European Middle Class party. Ran together with Volt and European Middle Class in the early parliamentary elections on November 14, 2021 and won 25.67%, emerging as the No1 political force in Parliament.
MIR (party)
Established June 4, 2019 by an initiative committee consisting of public figures, scientists, intellectuals and is chaired by Simeon Slavchev. Has run three times in parliamentary elections on a straight ticket: April 4, 2021 - 0.11%; July 11, 2021 - 0.13%; November 14, 2021 - 0.15%.
Conservative Alliance of the Right (KOD) (party)
Established April 7, 2019 and chaired by Petar Moskov. Has run in parliamentary elections three times - once on a straight ticket and twice in a coalition, with the following results: April 4, 2021 - 0.29%; July 11, 2021 (in a coalition) - 0.29%; November 14, 2021 (in a coalition) - 0.43%.
BTR - Bulgaria of Labour and Reason (party)
Established October 28, 2018 and is chaired by Georgi Manolov. Has run in parliamentary elections only once - on July 11, 2021, when it won 0.14% of the votes.
Coalition for You Bulgaria (party)
Established November 26, 2017 and chaired by Krassimir Manov. Has run once in parliamentary elections - on April 4, 2021, as part of a coalition; got 0.15% of the votes.
Vazrazhdane (party)
Established August 2, 2014 and chaired by Kostadin Kostadinov. Has run four times in parliamentary elections on a straight ticket with the following results: March 26, 2017 - 1.11%; April 4, 2021 - 2.45%; July 11, 2021 - 3.01%; November 14, 2021 - 4.86%.
Bulgarian Rise (coalition)
Established to participate in the October 2, 2022 snap elections and registered by the Central Election Commission on August 17, 2022. Headed by former caretaker prime minister and defence minister Stefan Yanev, who also chairs the eponymous Bulgarian Rise party. Bulgarian Rise party will run together with the Freedom party, Party of the Greens and the Agrarian People's Union. Party was established June 19, 2022.
Bulgarian National Union - ND (party)
Established March 3, 1990 and chaired by Boyan Rasate. Has run in five parliamentary elections on a straight ticket with the following results: July 5, 2009 - 0.09%; October 5, 2014 - 0.17%; April 4, 2021 - 0.09%; July 11, 2021 - 0.17%; November 14, 2021 - 0.04%.
Rise Up Bulgaria (party)
Established May 1, 2022 and based on the Rise Up. BG civil platform founded by Maya Manolova December 6, 2019. Runs in the parliamentary elections for the first time on a straight ticket. The Rise Up. BG platform has run in general elections as part of three coalitions and had the following results: April 4, 2021 - 4.72%; July 11, 2021 - 5.01%; November 14, 2021 - 2.29%.
Movement of Non-Party Candidates (party)
Established on August 6, 2020 and led by a coalition council consisting of Prof. Mincho Hristov, Boyko Nikiforov, Boyko Mladenov, Assoc. Prof. Ognyan Boyukliev. Has participated in three parliamentary elections - once on a straight ticket and twice as part of a coalition, and achieved the following results: April 4, 2021 (on a straight ticket) - 0.53%; July 11, 2021 (part of the BSP for Bulgaria coalition) - 13.39%; November 14, 2021 (part of the Rise Up! Here We Come! coalition) - 2.29%.
There Is Such a People (TISP) (party)
Established on February 16, 2020 and chaired by Stanislav "Slavi" Trifonov. Has run in three general elections on a straight ticket and had the following results: April 4, 2021 - 17.66%; July 11, 2021 - 24.08% (emerging as the first political force in Parliament); November 14, 2021 - 9.52%.
Glas Naroden [People's Voice] (party)
Established on November 11, 2012 and chaired by Svetoslav Vitkov. Has run in six parliamentary elections, once in a coalition, and achieved the following results: May 12, 2013 - 1.339%; October 5, 2014 - 1.14%; March 26, 2017 (part of the Reformist Bloc - People's Voice coalition) - 3.14%; April 4, 2021 - 0.26%; July 11, 2021 - 0.17%; November 14, 2021 - 0.44%.
Pravoto [The Law] party
Established August 17, 2019 and chaired by Maria Koleva. Has run in two parliamentary elections, on April 4, 2021 and on November 14, 2021. Never cleared the 1% threshold for eligibility for a state subsidy.
The Truth and Nothing but the Truth People's Party (party)
Established May 8, 2022 and chaired by Ventsislav Angelov. Runs in general elections for the first time.
GERB-UDF (coalition)
Established to participate in the April 4, 2021 elections by the GERB party and the Union of Democratic Forces (UDF). Coalition has run in three general elections with the following results: 26.18% on April 4, 2021 (emerging as the first political force in Parliament); July 11, 2021 - 23.51%; November 14, 2021 - 22.74%.
GERB was established on December 3, 2006; is member of the European People's Party in the EP. Chaired by Boyko Borissov. Has run seven times in parliamentary elections - four times on a straight ticket and three times as part of a coalition.
Achieved the following election results while running on a straight ticket:
July 5, 2009 - 39.72%; May 12, 2013 - 30.535%; October 5, 2014 - 32.67%; March 26, 2017 - 33.54%.
UDF is a coalition of political parties (Union of Democratic Forces) established on December 7, 1989, which was shortly after the fall of the communist regime on November 10 the same year.
Ran in the October 13, 1991 elections, winning 34.36% of the votes and in the December 18, 1994 elections, winning 24.23%. The coalition was transformed into a party in February of 1997, after which UDF ran in parliamentary elections ten times as part of coalitions.
Party is a member of the European People's Party in the EP. Chaired by Rumen Hristov.
Democratic Bulgaria Alliance (coalition)
Established April 12, 2018 by Yes, Bulgaria!, Democrats for Strong Bulgaria and the Green Movement, with leaders Hristo Ivanov, Atanas Atanassov and Vladislav Panev, respectively. Has participated in three parliamentary elections with the following results: April 4, 2021 - 9.45%; July 11, 2021 - 12.64%; November 14, 2021 - 6.37%. Was part of the ruling majority in the last Parliament.
Bulgarian Social Democracy - EuroLeft (party)
Established March 22, 2003 as Bulgarian Social Democracy, renamed Bulgarian Social Democracy - EuroLeft on February 20, 2016. Chaired by Aleksandar Tomov. Has participated five times in parliamentary elections, including once on a straight ticket, with the following results: June 25, 2005 (in coalition) - 1.3%; March 26, 2017 (in coalition) - 0.17%; April 4, 2021 (in coalition) - 0.11%; July 11, 2021 (in coalition) - 0.13%; November 14, 2021 (straight ticket) - 0.52%.
Ataka (party)
Established April 17, 2005 and chaired by Volen Siderov. Has run in eight parliamentary elections, including twice in a coalition, with the following results: June 25, 2005 (in coalition) - 8.14%; July 2009 – 9.36%; May 12, 2013 – 7.3%; October 5, 2014 – 4.52%; March 26, 2017 (in coalition) – 9.31 %; April 4, 2021 – 0.49%; July 11, 2021 – 0.46%; November 14, 2021 – 0.46%.
BSP for Bulgaria (coalition)
Established February 7, 2017 to run in the March 26, 2017 parliamentary elections by the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), Alexander Stamboliiski Agrarian Union, the Communist Party of Bulgaria, Nova Zora, Ecoglasnost Political Club and Trakia Political Club. The coalition for the upcoming elections includes BSP, Ecoglasnost Political Club and Trakia Political Club. Coalition has run under its present name in four general elections with the following results: March 26, 2017 – 27.93%; April 4, 2021 – 15.01%; July 11, 2021 – 13.39%; November 14, 2021 – 10.21%.
The Bulgarian Socialist Party is the dominant party in the coalition. Successor of the Bulgarian Social Democratic Party (BSDP), established August 2, 1891; renamed Bulgarian Communist Party (in 1948) which controlled the country during the totalitarian era until the fall of communism in 1989. Got its present name on April 3, 1990. A member of the Party of European Socialists and the Socialist International.
Party is chaired by Korneliya Ninova. Has participated in all 12 parliamentary elections as the leading party in various coalitions and won seats every time, with the following results: October 13, 1991 – 33.14%; December 1994 – 43.50%; April 19, 1997 – 22.07%; June 17, 2001 – 17.15%; June 25, 2005 – 30.95%; July 5, 2009 - 17.7%; May 12, 2013 – 26.61%; October 5, 2014 – 15.4%; March 26, 2017 – 27.93%; April 4, 2021 – 15.01%; July 11, 2021 – 13.39%; November 14, 2021 – 10.21%.
Russophiles for the Revival of the Fatherland (party)
Established November 1, 2008. Chaired by Nikolay Malinov. Has run in three parliamentary elections, once in a coalition, and achieved the following results: April 4, 2021 – 0.41%; July 11, 2021 (part of a coalition) – 0.38%; November 14, 2021 – 0.26%.
