US and Iran reach framework deal to end conflict and reopen Strait of Hormuz

The United States and Iran have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending a four-month conflict and establishing a framework for future negotiations. The agreement was signed by US President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, while Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf signed on behalf of Tehran.

According to a senior US official, the deal links sanctions relief and economic benefits to Iran’s compliance with nuclear verification measures and commitments to stop supporting terrorism and regional instability.

Strait of Hormuz traffic expected to recover

US officials said shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is already beginning to increase, although a full return to normal operations may take several weeks due to security concerns and mine-clearance efforts.

Iranian media also reported that several Iranian oil tankers and cargo ships successfully crossed what it described as a US naval blockade zone in the Gulf of Oman without incident, signaling a possible easing of maritime tensions.

Sanctions relief tied to Iranian compliance

Washington indicated that any release of frozen Iranian assets would occur gradually and only after Iran meets verifiable milestones. Officials emphasized that no funds have yet been released and that all economic measures will depend on Iran’s performance under the agreement.

The US also said its military presence in the Middle East will remain unchanged during the negotiation period until Iran demonstrates compliance with its commitments.

International support for the agreement

Seventeen countries, including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Canada, Australia and Greece, welcomed the agreement, calling it an opportunity to restore regional stability and strengthen the global economy.

In a joint statement, the countries urged the rapid implementation of the deal, supported the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and reiterated that Iran must never acquire a nuclear weapon. They also expressed readiness to ease sanctions in response to clear and verifiable steps by Iran regarding its nuclear program.

Toward a long-term settlement

The agreement follows months of escalating tensions and military exchanges between the US, Israel and Iran. International leaders said they are prepared to work with both sides and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to ensure the deal leads to a lasting diplomatic solution and greater stability across the Middle East.
