Twelve countries condemn Israeli interception of Gaza Aid Flotilla
The ministers of Türkiye, Brazil, Jordan, Pakistan, Spain, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Colombia, the Maldives, Mauritania, South Africa, and Libya described the flotilla as a peaceful civilian initiative aimed at highlighting the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. They said Israel’s actions against the vessels and the detention of activists in international waters breached international and humanitarian law, and called for the immediate release of those detained.
The statement also urged the international community to uphold legal obligations, protect civilians, and ensure accountability.
Italy opposes initiative
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reiterated her opposition to the flotilla, saying it does not provide meaningful assistance to Palestinians and may create additional challenges.
She said Italy had conveyed its stance through diplomatic channels and noted indications from Israeli officials that detained activists would be released. No decision has been made on deploying Italian naval vessels to escort other ships.
Background
The flotilla departed from Barcelona on April 12, with the main convoy leaving Sicily on April 26, aiming to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza, in place since 2007.
Gaza’s 2.4 million residents face severe humanitarian conditions amid ongoing conflict and widespread destruction since October 2023.
