Javier Bardem calls for “Freedom for Palestine” at the 2026 Oscars
While presenting the award for Best International Feature Film, Bardem addressed the audience with a message opposing war and supporting Palestinians. His remarks were met with applause from attendees at the ceremony.
Bardem also wore a visible statement on his tuxedo. Sewn onto the lapel was the phrase “No a la guerra” (“No to war”), along with a message expressing solidarity with Palestine.
Speech Draws Attention Amid Rising Middle East Tensions
The moment comes at a time of heightened political debate in the United States following recent American military strikes on Iran and ongoing discussions about Washington’s prolonged involvement in the Middle East.
Speaking earlier this season on the red carpet at the Primetime Emmy Awards, Bardem reiterated his concerns about the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
“I am here today denouncing the genocide in Gaza,” Bardem said.
“The International Association of Genocide Scholars has stated that what is happening there constitutes genocide. That is why we are calling for trade and diplomatic sanctions against Israel to stop the violence. Free Palestine.”
Hollywood Figures Sign Letter Criticizing Berlin Film Festival
In February, more than 100 prominent figures in the film industry — including Bardem — signed an open letter criticizing the Berlin International Film Festival for what they described as “silence” regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The letter, signed by current and former Berlinale participants, called on film institutions to refuse complicity in violence against Palestinians.
“We write as film workers, past and present Berlinale participants, who expect our industry’s institutions to refuse complicity in the horrific violence being inflicted on Palestinians,” the statement read.
The signatories also expressed concern over alleged censorship of artists opposing Israel’s actions in Gaza and criticized the role of the German state in supporting the situation.
