“Day will turn to night”: century’s longest solar eclipse set for August 12

A rare astronomical spectacle is expected to captivate skywatchers worldwide this summer, as the longest total solar eclipse of the century takes place on August 12—an event scientists say will not be repeated for another 157 years.

The phenomenon, known as a solar eclipse, will unfold during sunset, creating dramatic visual effects as daylight briefly gives way to darkness.

Key Timings of the Eclipse
First contact: 7:30 PM
Totality begins: 8:27 PM
End of eclipse: 9:30 PM

At the peak of totality, the sky is expected to darken completely, mimicking nighttime conditions for a short period.

Where Will It Be Visible?
The best viewing locations for full totality will be limited to:

  • Greenland
  • Iceland
  • Iberian Peninsula

Outside these regions, observers will experience only a partial eclipse, with reduced visibility.

What Will It Look Like?
During totality, observers may be able to see stars and even some planets in the daytime sky. The event will also feature brief but stunning optical effects:

Baily’s Beads: Bright points of light caused by sunlight passing through lunar valleys
Diamond Ring Effect: A final flash of sunlight resembling a glowing jewel
These moments last only seconds but are considered the most visually striking phases of any eclipse.

How to Watch Safely
Experts stress that proper eye protection is essential:

  • Use certified eclipse glasses during all phases
  • Only remove protection during full totality
  • Never look directly at the sun without approved filters
  • Failure to follow safety guidelines can result in permanent eye damage.

More Eclipses Ahead
While this historic eclipse won’t repeat until 2183, skywatchers can look forward to upcoming partial eclipses on:

  • August 2, 2027
  • January 26, 2028
