Zeybek calls for inspections of sports facilities and school grounds across Eastern Macedonia and Thrace

İskeçe (Xanthi) MP Hüseyin Zeybek has called for immediate safety and suitability inspections of sports facilities across Eastern Macedonia and Thrace following the death of a 16-year-old student and athlete during a football match in Thasos.

Zeybek submitted a parliamentary question calling on the competent ministry to inspect the safety and suitability of all sports facilities and stadiums across the region, including those located within schools.

The intervention follows the death of 16-year-old student and athlete Giana Aslan of Vyron Kavala during a football match at a sports facility in Thasos.

CALL FOR IMMEDIATE SAFETY INSPECTIONS
In his parliamentary question, Zeybek argued that participation in sports should not become a tragedy because of inadequate infrastructure or a lack of essential services.

“It is inconceivable that in 2026 participation in sporting activities can turn from a celebration into a tragedy, with lives lost either because of unsuitable sports infrastructure or other deficiencies, such as doctors and ambulances,” Zeybek said, according to the text of his parliamentary question.

He also called for amateur sports clubs and municipalities not to be left without the necessary state funding and support.

SUPPORT FOR AMATEUR SPORTS
Zeybek asked the competent ministry whether it would immediately inspect sports facilities throughout Eastern Macedonia and Thrace and introduce measures to financially support amateur sports.

He also asked whether special arrangements could be introduced to ensure that sports facilities with a daily presence of large numbers of children have access to a doctor even outside officially scheduled competitions.

The MP's questions place particular emphasis on the safety of children and young athletes using sports facilities on a regular basis, as well as on the availability of medical support in the event of an emergency.
