New Left Party Xanthi MP Hüseyin Zeybek made a speech in the parliament on the new draft law introduced by the New Democracy government on Producers and Animal Breeders.

Minority MP Hüseyin Zeybek, speaking as rapporteur of the New Left Party, stated the following in his speech:

New Left Party MP Hüseyin Zeybek summarised the speech in a press release:

"Justified demands of farmers and livestock breeders"

"Excerpts from my speech as rapporteur of the New Left Party on the new draft law on producers and livestock breeders introduced by the New Democracy Government"

Before I start my speech, Mr. Velopoulos, who took the floor before me in the Assembly, once again verbally attacked an MP with his extreme right-wing rhetoric. As a person who has been subjected to such attacks many times, I would like to express my condemnation of this incident, that every MP has the freedom to express himself and his beliefs freely and that such actions have no place in democracies.

At a time when farmers were protesting all over the country, we should have been discussing a development model that would strengthen the sector, support new production, production costs and the decrease in production incomes.

The producers forced Prime Minister Mitsotaki to meet with them with their protests, but they were again treated as beggars by the Prime Minister.

The region of Xanthi produces Basma, the world's highest quality flavoured tobacco, but production has decreased because the government does not provide the necessary support to tobacco producers.

Turning their backs on the olive growers damaged by the fires in the Evros region, they have not even received the pre-payment of the compensation to which they are entitled 6 months after the disaster.

As MPs of the New Left Party, we have submitted a parliamentary question to the parliament on measure 5.2 for the renovation of the facilities of livestock breeders and producers affected by the disasters in the region of Evros and Thessaly.

The draft law you have brought today is far from the real needs of farmers and producers, and especially your idea of gathering animal breeding facilities together will lead to the destruction of all animals in a moment, since the European Union has decided to destroy the herd where the disease is detected in the face of diseases that will recur.

Following the example of Cyprus, we demand an immediate amendment of the ELGA regulation to cover the new realities of the climate crisis with a bold increase in insurance contributions as well as state funding.

We demand that you provide the same privileges to farmers as you provide to shipowners (discounted fuel).

We call for an immediate revision of the national strategic plan for the implementation of the new PDP, with measures to serve the production support plan.

We demand the protection of the first housing, agricultural lands and facilities due to loan debts, the zeroing of VAT on basic food needs such as milk, meat and olive oil, and the completion of inspections with the ARTEMIS 2 programme.

The New Democracy Party, with the wrong policies it has implemented, has led livestock breeders and farmers to a dead end and turns a blind eye to those who make unfair profit from this situation through the sector.

The agriculture and livestock sector is now recognising the danger, taking steps to demand policy redesign and realising that the only way to survive is through a new cooperative movement.

As the New Left Party, we believe that farmers deserve a better future. Since the current draft law does not solve any of the basic problems of the producers, we vote against this draft law.
