Western Thrace Minority figures sue journalist Nikos Arvanitis for defamation
A group of 16 members of the Western Thrace Turkish Minority have filed a compensation lawsuit against journalist Nikos Arvanitis, alleging defamation and targeted accusations in his public statements and media content.
The first hearing of the case took place on Wednesday at the Rodopi Multi-Member Court of First Instance, marking a new phase in an ongoing legal dispute between the two sides.
Legal Dispute Escalates
The case follows an earlier complaint filed by Arvanitis against 17 minority members. In response, 16 individuals have now turned to the courts, claiming the journalist used insulting and defamatory language that harmed their reputations.
During the hearing, lawyers from both sides presented their arguments, submitted evidence, and called witnesses. The minority representatives were legally represented by İlker Çavuşoğlu.
Prominent Figures Among Plaintiffs
The plaintiffs include a number of high-profile political, municipal, and civil society figures, such as:
- Hüseyin Zeybek
- Özgür Ferhat
- Çiğdem Asafoğlu
- Aydın Ahmet
- Sedat Hasan
- Rıdvan Molla İsa
- Caner İmam
- Erdem Hüseyin
The list also includes former officeholders and NGO representatives, reflecting broad institutional representation within the minority community.
Court Awaits Decision
Following the presentation of testimonies and evidence, the court is expected to review the case file and issue a ruling in the coming weeks.
Broader Implications
The case is being closely watched as it raises questions about freedom of expression, defamation law, and minority rights in Greece, particularly in the sensitive context of Western Thrace.
