Water pipeline for Şapçı Stadium passes through Muslim Cemetery

The opposition in Sapçi-Maronia Municipality has expressed strong criticism over the local administration's decision to run a water pipeline through a Muslim cemetery to supply water to the town’s stadium and its western outskirts.

Opposition leader Dinos Haritopoulos issued a written statement titled, “Questions About the Water Pipeline Passing Through Sapçi Muslim Cemetery”. The statement outlined several concerns about the project, including:

The basis and planning of the project,
Potential health risks and environmental damage from possible leaks,
Why an alternative route behind the cemetery was not used,
The absence of consultation with cemetery caretakers or local Muslim administrative bodies,
Whether approvals from health and regulatory authorities were obtained.
Haritopoulos highlighted that the pipeline’s placement within the cemetery raises questions about respect for cultural and religious sensitivities. He also stressed potential risks to public health if the pipeline sustains damage, which could directly impact the cemetery grounds.

The opposition has called for greater transparency and demanded answers from the municipality. Local Muslim community leaders are expected to voice their concerns, seeking clarification and accountability for the project.

No official response has been made by the Sapçi-Maronia Municipality yet. The issue continues to stir controversy among residents and officials alike.
