The two regional factions, citing a relevant announcement by the Association of Employees of the Evros Regional Council, asked to be informed about the reasons for this move, and the reasons why the service itself was not used. It is worth noting that the contested decision entrusts the strengthening of the monitoring sector of the applications of the mosquito control programme of the EMT and the strengthening of insect surveillance, at a total cost of 36,704 euros with 24% VAT.
The contractor will be responsible for the monitoring of the control activities and the supply of 10 additional traps for the monitoring of diseases such as West Nile virus. Direct attack to the opposition Lavros was the responsible Deputy Regional Minister of Civil Protection Mr. Kostas Venetidis, who accused the factions that they uncritically adopted the announcement of the trade unionists of the Evros region, noting that the trade unionists of the rest of the EMT did not issue similar announcements. He stressed that seeing early this year, due to the weather conditions, that there is a risk of an outbreak of West Nile virus, they wanted to set an additional 10 traps, bigger and better, and this is done with this particular assignment, which also assists public officials in control.
Particularly aggressive was also the Regional Governor Mr. Christodoulos Topsidis, who stressed that this action was taken in contact with the relevant department and the need for additional controls due to the increased risk of West Nile virus. He stressed that despite what was mentioned in the announcement, university departments were also contacted, but the cost of the fight was much higher than the final assignment.
As for the mosquito control center proposed, he recalled that the reopening of the Regional Public Health Laboratory in Alexandroupolis is proceeding, which will also help in the fight against West Nile virus. He specifically accused the head of the Independent Unitarian Initiative, Mr. Stergios Iliopoulos, as a "common slanderer", refusing to withdraw the phrase until Mr. Iliopoulos publicly withdraws his reference that "in our Region, mosquitoes, apart from blood, suck money from the treasury".
