Varoufakis: People should elect their mufti
The leader of the MeRA25 party, Yanis Varoufakis, visited Xanthi on Saturday, April 29, as part of the election campaign, and said that in an ideal country, the people should be able to choose their mufti.
At the press conference he held, Varoufakis emphasized that in an ideal country, the people should be able to elect their own mufti or priest, but they do not currently live in an ideal country.
Varoufakis stated that their proposal, as a party, is that a structure consisting of minority representatives should propose the names it deems appropriate for the mufti, and that the state chooses among these proposed people.
Yannis Varoufakis also touched upon the religious authority of the muftis and said that every minority member should have the freedom to choose between sharia and civil law.
