Significant tensions have emerged within Greece’s extra-parliamentary left following MeRA25’s decision to end its collaboration with Popular Unity – Unsubmissive Left (LAE-AA). The move effectively marks a split in the MeRA25 | Radical Ecological Left coalition.

The decision comes in the wake of violent incidents at the Polytechnic University during recent commemorations, involving the group ARAS. MeRA25 leader Yanis Varoufakis and the party’s Political Bureau condemned the events from the outset and decided to sever ties with ARAS. In contrast, Popular Unity defended ARAS and accused MeRA25 of attempting to exclude certain leftist forces from party processes and broader grassroots movements.

In an official statement, MeRA25 noted that the LAE-AA’s position “places itself outside the unifying initiative of MeRA25 | Radical Ecological Left,” arguing that condoning violent and divisive acts undermines the coalition’s goal of fostering unity among progressive leftist forces.

MeRA25 emphasized that its decision reaffirms its commitment to advancing a unified leftist project with “historical responsibility to end violence and the plundering of people and nature in Greece, Europe, and across the world by neoliberal authoritarian governments.”
