Unanimous approval from the Iasmos Municipal Council for the School of Second Chance (SDE)
The effort to open a branch of the Komotini SDE in Iasmos dates back to 2018, when the initial request for its operation was submitted. Despite continuous efforts, even during the pandemic, there was no progress until now.
Mayor Mr. Caner Imam emphasized that establishing the SDE in Iasmos was one of their commitments, and significant steps have been taken to make this a reality. However, a suitable space needed to be provided to meet the formal requirements.
The initiative was presented by the General Secretary of the Municipality, Ms. Christina Vidoura, who explained that the process of creating the SDE began last winter. This school aims to help people without a middle school diploma who wish to continue their education. Ms. Vidoura reminded that a School of Second Chance had previously operated in Iasmos, but it became inactive and ceased its operations. Interest in the program is high, with over 77 applications submitted, mostly from women. The school will operate in the afternoons, and the space in the old high school will be allocated, with the Municipality covering heating and consumable expenses.
Ms. Vidoura emphasized that the operation of the SDE will significantly benefit citizens who are currently excluded from many job opportunities because they lack a compulsory education diploma. Additionally, it will allow them to continue their educational journey, opening new horizons for them. The approval of the space allocation by the Municipal Council was necessary for the School to be implemented, which has now been granted unanimously.
