Turkish shooting suspect arrested in Rhodope

Greek authorities have arrested a Turkish national wanted in connection with Tuesday’s armed attack on Greek intelligence agents near Thessaloniki. The man was captured during a coordinated police and counterterrorism raid at a residence in a mountain village in Rhodope.

He is believed to be the driver of the gray Toyota SUV with Turkish plates used in the attack and reportedly fired shots during the ambush. The two other suspects remain at large.

According to Kathimerini, police sources say the suspects are linked to the “Daltons,” a Turkish criminal gang involved in drug trafficking, extortion, and murders across Europe. Their leader, Baris Boyun, was arrested in Italy in May 2024. Greek intelligence services had been monitoring activity in Thrace, suspecting the gang was using the region as a hideout.

The attack occurred near a gas station in Thermi, outside Thessaloniki, when the Turkish suspects realized they were being followed by officers from Greece’s National Intelligence Service (EYP). One man approached the surveillance car and fired three times—striking the vehicle but causing no injuries.

Following the shooting, a large-scale police operation led to six arrests in Komotini on separate drug and ammunition charges, but only one has been directly tied to the shooting.

Greek authorities continue to intensify efforts against Turkish organized crime networks, which have increasingly used Greece as a base of operations in recent years.
