Police and Animal Welfare Federation launch cooperation to protect animals
Thessaloniki is becoming the first police directorate in Greece to establish structured institutional cooperation with the Panhellenic Animal Welfare and Environmental Federation, aiming to improve the management of animal abuse cases and strengthen animal protection.
As part of the cooperation, the creation of a joint training team, a permanent communication channel and the development of shared support tools for police services were agreed. The federation also submitted a proposal for the establishment of a pilot special animal protection unit in Thessaloniki.
The cooperation was formalised during a meeting between representatives of the Panhellenic Animal Welfare and Environmental Federation and Thessaloniki Police Director General Major General Georgios Tzimas, Thessaloniki Police Directorate Chief Brigadier General Georgios Gkampra, and the police liaison officer responsible for animal protection, First Lieutenant Georgios Papadopoulos.
The federation was represented by Eleftheria Vekiloglou, who outlined the primary challenges that police stations encounter on a daily basis when addressing animal protection cases. Vekiloglou proposed establishing a pilot Special Animal Protection Unit in Thessaloniki, which would be staffed by specially trained police officers to assist local police stations in handling complex cases.
According to a press release, the initiative aims to serve as a model for other police directorates across Greece, following an evaluation of its results.
