Thessaloniki tightens security ahead of 90th TIF
The Hellenic Police has introduced enhanced security and traffic measures in Thessaloniki ahead of the opening of the 90th Thessaloniki International Fair on Saturday, with more than 3,500 officers on standby as protest rallies are expected across the city.
The operational plan is aimed at preventing incidents, maintaining public safety and ensuring the smooth movement of residents and visitors during the fair.
Around 60 riot police and other specialised units will be deployed, with additional personnel arriving from neighbouring prefectures to reinforce local forces.
Drones to monitor rallies
Police drones will transmit live images to the Operations Centre at Thessaloniki Police Headquarters, allowing authorities to monitor demonstrations scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
Preventive checks will also be carried out before the rallies as part of measures to deter potential incidents.
City centre traffic restrictions
The Thessaloniki Traffic Police Directorate has announced extensive restrictions on stopping and parking in the city centre.
The historic centre will be closed to vehicle traffic on Saturday from 15:00 as part of the measures accompanying the demonstrations.
Authorities have urged drivers and visitors to plan their movements accordingly and follow instructions from traffic police.
Metro stations to close
Thessaloniki Metro services will also be affected.
Eight metro stations will temporarily close on Saturday from 15:00 due to the demonstrations, with the restrictions expected to remain in place for as long as required for public safety.
The measures are part of the wider security operation surrounding the opening of the 90th TIF and the large-scale demonstrations expected in Thessaloniki.
