Traffic ban on the Egnatia Highway due to strong winds: Where chains are needed in Xanthi?
To ensure the smooth and safe flow of traffic due to strong winds in the area, a temporary traffic ban for all vehicles weighing over 3.5 tons will be in effect from today (December 26, 2024) starting at 06:00. This decision, made by the Police Directorates of Xanthi and Rodopi, prohibits the circulation of such vehicles on both lanes of the Egnatia Highway, between the Vafeikon underpass in Xanthi, the Iasmos underpass, and the Western underpass of Komotini.
The traffic restrictions will remain in place as long as the adverse weather conditions persist in the area. Traffic for these vehicles will be redirected through the national road network of Xanthi - Porto Lagos - Komotini.
Additionally, the General Regional Police Directorate of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace has provided the following information regarding the road conditions in the region:
Xanthi Regional Unit:
On the municipal and forest road of Kallithea Stavroupolis – Dasiko Village, all vehicles must use anti-skid chains due to snowfall and ice.
Rodopi Regional Unit:
Vehicle traffic is suspended due to increased water levels at the Irish crossings of Mosaiiko, Imeros, Aetokoryfi, Lofariou, Kosmiou, Mesochoriou, Hephaistos, and Arrianon.
