The first Climate Change Observatory in the Region
This was announced at the 9th Regional Information Day "Adaptation of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace to Climate Change" , which was held in Kavala, by the President of the "Green Fund", Ioannis Androulakis .
"We organize Civil Protection on the basis of scientific data, and by supplying our services with modern equipment so that they become effective to the maximum extent", emphasized, among others, the Regional Governor of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Christodoulos Topsidis , who is also the President of the Energy, Environment Committee & Climate Change of the Union of Regions of Greece for Climate Change, and mentioned the use for the first time, last summer, of drones, for the early detection of fires in Rhodohpe, Evros and Thassos, which proved to be extremely effective as a result.
"Today, when nothing is certain due to climate change, we have to act with a plan and face its pressing effects", said Mr. Topsidis, and added: "To do this we have a useful tool at our disposal, the "LIFE-IP" which is the most important action for the adaptation of Greece to the effects of climate change".
The Deputy Governor of Kavala, Dr. Theodoros Markopoulos, presented all the effects of climate change in the EM-Thrace Region and in particular referred to the phenomenon of water scarcity and the consequences it has in the primary sector but also on the income of producers, the dry storms that became the cause for fires in Thassos and Kavala, but also in coastal erosion.
As part of the conference, a working meeting was also held, in the presence of the General Secretary of Forestry, Efstathios Stathopoulos and with the participation of officials from the Technical and Forestry Services of the EM-Thrace Region in view of the implementation of anti-flood projects, fire protection projects, as well as restoration projects burned forest lands .
