Sheep and goat pox declines in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, but concerns persist

Strict protective measures and restrictions on animal movement remain in place to curb the spread of the disease, despite a decline in new cases of sheep and goat pox reported between January 13-22, 2025, according to the Veterinary Directorate of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (EMT).

Spread in Samothrace and Enforced Restrictions
The disease has heavily impacted Samothrace, leading to the suspension of operations at the local slaughterhouse. Animal movement from surveillance or restricted zones is only permitted for slaughter at the nearest facilities and under strict biosecurity measures.

Product Safety and Public Health
The Veterinary Directorate reassures the public that:

Sheep and goat pox does not transmit to humans or other animal species.
Animal products (milk, meat) remain entirely safe, provided they undergo standard thermal processing, such as pasteurization, boiling, or thorough cooking.
The focus remains on preventing the disease's spread and protecting the region's livestock.

Recommendations for Citizens
"Should you need to move near livestock farms, we urge strict adherence to protective measures. Unnecessary movement could contribute to the disease's spread and transmission."

Advice to Hunters
"Hunters are advised to maintain their dogs away from livestock farms and strictly follow biosecurity protocols to avoid disease transmission. Do not let your activities be blamed for spreading the disease and harming farmers' livelihoods."

Guidelines for Farmers
Farmers are encouraged to:

Monitor Animals: Check daily for suspicious symptoms, including skin lesions (red spots, pimples, discharge, or nodules on the chest, abdomen, armpits, under the tail, and around the mouth). Report any symptoms to your local veterinary center immediately.
Restrict Access: Limit entry to your facilities to essential personnel and veterinary services only.
Isolate Livestock: Keep animals within their stables, avoid contact with other herds, and refrain from exchanging or lending animals.
Biosecurity:
Use dedicated clothing and footwear for farm work.
Do not share agricultural equipment, tools, feed, or other supplies with colleagues.
Disinfect tools, vehicles, and facilities regularly.
Use disinfection trenches or devices for vehicles entering or leaving the farm.
Demand mandatory disinfection of milk collection vehicles.
Special Restrictions for Samothrace
No movement of sheep and goats is permitted within the island.

The Veterinary Directorate emphasizes the importance of cooperation from all stakeholders to contain the disease. Restrictions will remain in effect for at least 21 days after eliminating the outbreaks.
