Scientific Conference will be organised in Xanthi, the city of tobacco and architectural heritage.
The Department of Architectural Engineering of the Democritus University of Thrace (DPTH), attempting to contribute to the wider debate on the restoration - reuse of buildings and building complexes of the cultural heritage and the proper management of their historical, cultural and developmental burden, organizes a conference on the theme "Xanthi, the city of tobacco and architectural heritage. From yesterday to today".
The work of the conference will take place on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, in the event hall "Virginia Tsouderou" of the Tobacco Warehouse "P" (Kapnergaton 9, Xanthi). The organization is supported by the Thracian Art and Tradition Foundation (ITHTP), and the Culture Memory History Actions program.
The topics of the conference will examine the tobacco-producing architectural heritage of Xanthi and the key issue of the management of the buildings and complexes that the booming period of the tobacco trade bequeathed to the city.
Guided by the interdisciplinary approach to the issue by ITH professors and experts on the subject, participants will have the opportunity to understand and discuss the historical, architectural and artistic elements that characterize these buildings.
The program of the day will also examine modern restoration practices and reuse proposals, taking into account their particularities and the prospects that such a direction can have, thus contributing creatively to the economic life of the local community. Therefore, the challenge of social awareness to save and address our architectural heritage as a pillar of development and progress will also be considered.
The work of the conference is open to the general public and participation, until the available places are filled, is ensured by sending the details of the interested parties (name, surname, phone number and status) to the email address: hmerida.xanthi.kapnos.duth@gmail.com
The sessions of the conference will be broadcast live through the ITHTP YouTube channel. Remote participants can submit questions to the conference email address.
