Şapçı Trustees make statement on water line in Turkish cemetery
The Şapçı Trustees have addressed concerns about the Maronya Municipality’s decision to lay a new water line through the Turkish cemetery in Şapçı. Speaking to Millet newspaper, Treasurer Cafer Hafız Mehmet provided clarity on the situation.
Hafız Mehmet stated that they were informed by Maronya Deputy Mayor Mustafa Şakir about the plan to supply water to the district stadium and the western parts of Şapçı via a line running along the cemetery’s edge. Following on-site inspections, it was confirmed that the new line would follow the same route as the previous one, adjacent to the cemetery wall, without affecting graves. The Trustees did not object, as the municipality assured them of no disruption.
Addressing criticisms from opposition leader Dinos Haritopulos, Hafız Mehmet dismissed his remarks as politically motivated, highlighting that Haritopulos had shown little concern for the cemetery during his mayoral tenure.
Hafız Mehmet emphasized that no complaints had been received from local residents and that any future issues would be promptly addressed by the municipality. Written assurances have been provided and will be shared with the press.
